St Paul’s Church Lorrimore Square

Stations of the Cross at 10.00am

Good morning all, I would like to inform you of three services for Good Friday in addition to any existing plans you may have to mark this most sacred of days. They are spread throughout the day and should give you time to attend any one of them around your working hours.

St Paul’s Church Lorrimore Square

Stations of the Cross at 10.00am

On this day we usually journey with each other though the last day of Jesus’ life in the form of the Stations of the Cross. In church we have 14 numbered plaques around the nave depicting key moments on Jesus’ tortuous path from his trial to his tomb.

We will commemorate his passion with hymns, readings and prayer in this powerful yearly service markings Jesus sacrifice of love and duty.

After the service visitors are welcome to join us for a breakfast of tea and hot crossed buns in the main hall.

St Mary’s Kennington

THE LITURGY OF THE PASSION at 1.00pm

We enter the stripped and bare church in silence. As the ministers enter, they fall to ground and prostrate face down, as a sign of profound grief and sorrow for the crucifixion of Christ. After this we read dramatically the Passion of Christ according to St John. Then a crucifix is processed in and unveiled proclaiming the cross of Christ and the minsters and people come forward to venerate the cross as a sign of our adoration. After this, the solemn Good Friday intercessions are prayed for the Church and world.

We then bring back the sacrament that was reserved the night before from the altar of repose and receive communion. We depart in silence, embracing the grief and emptiness that Jesus’first followers experienced on the first Good Friday.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS at 7.00pm

We walk the fourteen images around the walls of the church, remembering Jesus’ journey to the cross and tomb.

Wintershall Theatre Performance at Trafalgar Square

Passion of Christ at 12.00pm and 3.00pm

These are two performances at 12.00 midday and 3.00pm where the Wintershall Theatre Group will perform in the make-shift outdoor amphitheatre at Trafalgar Square. We will see realistic depictions of Jesus’s arrival in Jerusalem, the Last Supper, his dilemma in the Garden of Gethsemane and his Passion and crucifixion.

Try to get there an hour early as seats fill up quickly. The weather has been good in recent years but be sure to check the weather and dress appropriately. You might want to bring a flask of tea if it gets chilly!

Attendants will be invited to prayer afterwards by the presiding Bishop. This show is very powerful and highly recommended if you can attend.
